I got the old fitting out with a flex head breaker bar, and installed the new fitting today. No more leaking coming from that area.

I added 5 quarts of ATF, but the dipstick is still not up to level (on the HOT reading). Most sources say 4.5 quarts should fill it up after draining. Should I keep adding more? I'm concerned with overfilling it, or worse, I am losing fluid from somewhere else. This is the procedure I used to fill the fluid:

1) Start engine and warm up.
2) Add fluid through filler tube.
3) Cycle down and back through all the gears.
4) Check dipstick level (at HOT reading).
5) Check under truck for leaks.
6) Add more fluid - repeating all steps, all while engine is running.

I did also spot where the fluid filler tube mates to the transmission housing. From what I could see of it, it was all caked with dry dirt, no indication I have leak there. No fluid is found on the ground under the truck.

I would say that you have no leak at the fill tube, based off what you say. Make sure to run the transmission thru the gears after adding the 5 quarts. Then add 1/2 quart at a time and run the gears in between. Drive it and recheck and add as needed.

I think Performabuilt transmissions said lockup circuit uses a good amount and why it's important to drive/simulate that condition when filling.....

I added the last quart I had on hand and it just topped the level. I'll monitor the level in the next few weeks as I'll be driving it more.

I'd say I'm good to go with this particular issue. Thanks to everyone who chimed in and special thanks to @movietvet for some very specific knowledge.
