i all back again.
We just bought a large tank for an oil rig. It is 8 feet wide, 6 feet high and 18 feet long. Estimated weight is 8000 to 9000 pounds.
Using a proper trailer, is this something that my 97 Chevy K3500 7.4L 4X4 dually could tow ok? Or is this going to be too much weight?

We are looking at ways to get it from Texas to Oklahoma without paying a fortune!

Your axle ratio is 4.10? 8k-9k includes the trailer? It's a conventional bumper pull trailer? I believe these trucks were limited to 10k on the bumper pull, but went to like 12.5k for gooseneck setups. This is per the owner's manual.

Yes, 4.10.
8K is the tank alone. Be a bumper pull at this time but could go to gooseneck. Just don't have that installed.

That is great, thank you. I don't have an owner's manual for the truck and was going to try to find one.

Looks like it is set at 10K for bumper pull trailer weight.
Not sure how much you'd want to push that. I suppose if you are over it is illegal anyway.

10k limit rating is specific to the 2 5/8 hitch rating. Trailer with brakes would do fine if can keep total weight around 10k

Whats the GCWR. The gross combined vehicle rating is the total of what the truck weighs including its bed load and tougne wieght then add trailers total loaded. Thats the gross combined. Its listed on the glove box door.

GCWR I believe is 17k. The hitch is the only thing holding the bumper pull rating up at 10k. I wouldn't hesitate to hook up to 12-14k bumper pull with a WD hitch, but I do have a Super hitch rated for it. Still though, the stock hitches are pretty stout. And the 10k rating only applies with WD, without it'll be lower.

Here is some info I finally came across. It is about a 98 but pretty much the same truck.

Ball Hitch - 10,000 LBS trailer 1,000 LBS tongue

Fifth Wheel - 10,000 LBS trailer 3,000 LBS tongue. This one goes to 12K for 4.56 gears. Ball hitch still 10K.

GCWR - 17,000 LBS - So this is the weight of your truck + passengers, cargo, fuel, and total weight of the trailer.
