I was going to suggest re-gearing to at least 4.10, but you have to do both axles, unless you will drive it exclusively on 2wd. Otherwise tow in 3rd as was mentioned.

I think your weak link will be the transmission. Get the largest transmission oil cooler you can fit in there. I think I read someone here said they installed a Duramax trans. cooler? Maybe find one at your local wrecking yard for cheap.

Is that really a heavy half? Those are actually a lot more capable than a regular half. OP for stopping look into the hydroboost swap. If you're lacking spring, get a true 2500 leaf pack. Tow in 3rd, not OD and go for a quick test drive all the way up to highway speed to see what you think first. Make sure the tires are maxxed out on air too. If you have a WD hitch, this will be your saving grace. Sounds like you won't have a ton of wind resistance so that's good.
Yeah, it is. 8-lug 2500's GVW is 8600+
Most 1500's are 6800ish. That 2500LD is smack in the middle. 1500 frame, D rated tires, thicker torsion bars, HD brakes. (What's the RPO code? F44 I think?) 14 bolt 6-lug rear axle. Heavy half.

Close. My 1500 is/was 6200#, 6600# for a heavy half, and 7200# for a LD2500. Far as I can tell, same front brakes but bigger rears and they do make a difference. Rear axle goes from 3600# up to 4600# IIRC on the LD2500, so probably 4200# on the heavy half. OP go fact check me on your door sticker.

Well, I went to my '00 Denali for my half ton "ish" values. Considering the 5400lb curb weight, GM must've given the SUV's a little extra. At least on paper...
