Volvos had the G80??? That's news to me! I thought G80 was a GM-only thing. Or maybe I'm thinking the G80 RPO code was a GM thing?

But I suppose no big surprise. I mean, surely Eaton sold the same locker to other manufacturers?

Edit: HO-LEE SHEET! LOL

Yeah, we called it the G80 without even really knowing that was Chevy's RPO code. RWD Volvos (like that 740) use a Dana 30.

I don't care much for welding parts to the diff like that, I prefer to chop that weight off rather than add something to keep it in place.

BTW, my 10 year old son asked me if that traction control button on our Express passenger van was the drifting button?! I told him he had been watching too many The Fast and the Furious movies, LOL.

Hence the Avatar!

That's funny the Gov-Loc came to be known outside of the GMT400 world as it's GM RPO code. Better to just call it the Gov-Bomb and be more technically accurate. :D

As to the question whether a 9.5" 14 bolt ever came -without- a Gov-Loc, absolutely. I keep a file of old SPID label pictures from previous parts trucks and found several that were 9.5" 14 bolts, both with and without Gov-Loc RPO's. I've got a couple 88-89 C2500 6 lug 4.10/no Gov-Loc, 91 C2500 8 lug 4.10/no Gov-Loc, 94 K1500 6 lug (F44, aka "heavy half") with 3.42(!) with Gov-Loc ...

So yeah, they're definitely out there, just luck of the draw. And, whether you can read the SPID label or not (sketchy on 88-94 models due to sticker placement) and if the thing has been swapped out or not in its past. Pull the cover. You wanna know the condition of it anyway.

What is the recommended differential oil and capacity for a 1996 c1500 2WD with GU4 axle code?

Could not locate. Thanks!

75-90, or 80-90, and it takes about a quart and a half, so you have to buy 2 quarts. GU4 means you have 308 gears. Being a 2 WD, you have a 10 bolt, 8.5 open diff rear end.

To elaborate on Kenny's response...

If you have the factory G80 locker, you'll want to make sure you use a GL5 80W-90 gear oil with no additives or friction modifiers. Any type of friction modifiers will prevent the G80 from operating correctly. I use this ACDelco 10-4051 in my '97s which both have the G80s.

But since 75-90 is synthetic, and 80-90 is not, original question still remains. Not sure which one is better for me. Also with the capacity are you sure on that? I've changed the oil about 8 times in my 8.6" nbs and i use about 3.2 quarts. With that i have to use conventional bc i installed a detroit tru-trac in there. to top off the oil i use a paperclip with a knife mark at 15 and 20mm so i can refill 15mm below filling hole. not sure if same method or level may be used when filling these?

You don't need synthetic, but if that's what you want to use, then go for it. As for the capacity, HUM now that I think about it, I have to buy 3 quarts, but I know I didn't buy 4 quarts, bc all they had on the shelf was 2, and I had to go across town to get 1 more. I used about 1/2 of the 3ed bottle. So about 2 and 1/2 quarts. I also have a trutrac in my 97. I don't think that changed the capacity though. Also, I have always filled my diff, until the oil starts coming out of the fill hole.

Do they make new front hubs for a 95 C3500HD with the I beam front axle? All I have been able to find is DRW rear hubs from ACdelco. Thanks in advance!
