Be ready, this could be a long one

I bought a 99 gmc 1500 a month ago, I estimate I has about 400k miles. The title from 2016 has 290k and the cluster was replaced sometime between now and then.

I have no service history on the transmission, however the old timer I bought it off wasn’t scared to throw money at it.

Light throttle TCC will lock and then slip, and repeats until more throttle is applied, then seems to lock up well. I sucked the fluid out via the dipstick 3 times and each time it’s gotten progressively better until the tach barely moves but the shudder is still present (albeit better). So I said screw it, this time I’ll drop the pan, put a filter in and install the A74741Q tcc valve while I was in there.

Welp come to find out, looks like the sonnex upgrade valve has been installed and of course I damaged it trying to remove it because it was stuck in the bore.

Now the question is, can I just install the A74741Q in place of the sonnex, or will it not work because it no longer has oem parts in it?

Btw, pan was pretty clean for high miles, but fluid was pretty dirty the first time I changed it out.

There's a Sonnax valve that involves reaming the valve body casting. The replacement valve comes with a sleeve that I'm guessing is a better quality alloy (hence the need to ream the existing valve bore.) Unfortunately, the reamer alone is around $115-ish, plus valve is around $40.

What does your valve look like?

You can always just get a remanufactured valve body. RockAuto had them for around $175 last year I was looking at doing mine.

The valve looks like the one picture. Only difference is the tip of the valve is blue

It looks the same as this one, no?
I was not able to get the valve out of the sleeve, it’s either stuck or made that way. The only difference between what I have and the pic you supplied

Ok, gotcha. I'm not sure on the sleeve... Did the actual internal valve slide out okay?
Edit: sorry, I thought sleeve, but you said valve...
Maybe call up Sonnax for guidance???

There's a way to test these valves on the valve body how well they seal with a homemade vacuum pump with guages. I've seen videos, but I've never done it. Vacuum pump + guages and plumbing fittings will set you back around $200 or more.

So iv answered my own question and for anyone else that might wounder, it is quite clear the valve on the right will not work due to the larger valve on the left already being installed.

I’m going to order a sonnex valve and see if between that and new fluid/filter if my problem goes away.

If the problem is still present I think I would rather just spend all the money on a new trans and tc, rather then spend a large chunk of money on bolt on parts and still have an unknown trans.
