Why?, because you can't get the axles out without removing the pin. This is a very common problem with these bolts.

Now that I’m actually able to find where that bolt goes... it makes a heck of a lot more sense. I googled cross bolt and everything that initially came up was pointing toward a front end suspension component. Lol. I haven’t gotten that far into my rear diff project to know any better.

Why are you pulling axels? Replacing bearings?

Leaking seal on the passenger side. So, I'm replacing the bearings and seals on both sides.
