Confused! The new engine was supplied complete with heads (only ancillaries need to be carried over) and your old motor is still in the truck. What's the engine without heads on the hoist?

The stripped motor is my original motor that had 425k. The engine in the burb is a rebuild pos from a local shop that didnt last 50k.

It's looking good!
Noticed that the oil filter looks quite short in height - is that standard GM height? The ones I've been using are 5'' tall. Would that account for my oil level on my dipstick only coming up to the second from bottom hole when I do an oil and filter change and put in the recommended 5 Qrts?

May be the car filter instead of the truck one. Back in the day, the car one was PF25, truck one was PF35, and it's about 2" longer. I use the AC PF1218 filter which is specified for the Vortec engines. I also put at least half a quart of oil in the filter so the pump has something to start with.

Took me a moment - car one on Suburban5's Vortec. Mine are from Rock Auto and ordered through the Suburban channel. Wix 51060 and from the website page, the alternative part numbers:

Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 05715388, 0FE00344, 25013977, 25014831, 25160561, 25325409, 2945611070, 51060MP, 8251605610, 89060468, 89060500, 97780227, DG5, FL12A, FP5, FPS5, HM5, LF3679, LF3679J, LF653J, OC114, P550964, PF1218, PF1218CL, PF1218F, PH13, PH5, SPF1218, TG13, TG5, TY22085E, UPF1218, W8800474, XG5

5 Qrts fill is from Haynes truck manual - but hey, it's Heynes!

I also put at least half a quart of oil in the filter so the pump has something to start with.

I fill to the brim - but yours is a K and tilted IIRC.

no, mine is a C1500. Sometimes I do fill it to the top, but didn't at the last oil change because I didn't have that much oil. I get the oil at WalMart, but they had a supply issue with it for a while. I think they're trying to get away from dino oil and get everyone using synthetic oil. Not doing that on this truck; it's been good with quaker state 10/30 and now 10/40 high mileage blend for 8 years.
PH5 is the fram equivalent of AC PF25; PH13 = PF35. Dad always used AC filters on our GM vehicles since they're OEM. I used a Mopar filter on my Dodge when I had it for the same reason. As long as I can get the AC through O'Reilly I'll use them. I buy the oil from Walmart because it's cheaper enough that it pays for the filter.
AC used to make a two quart model for fleet use, that's almost a foot long. That one full of oil was heavy lol! Used it on my 90 3/4 ton Burb, cause I had the ground clearance. It was about even with the bottom of the pan IIRC. I think Purolator is the only source on those now. The big difference between the PF1218 and PF35 is an anti drain back valve, which is probably for the K series where the filter is sideways. But there's no distinction in the catalog listings.....

You have a good eye and @HotWheelsBurban sounds about right. Shes correct this is not the "standard filter" idk why gm sent this one. It's like p or f 454. Never heard of it. But it makes sense because you have to change the oil in like 500 to 1000k miles. When I go back with the new one I'll install the correct size filter. As far as oil lever its calling for 5qts and 10w-30. I think theres a quart inside now, so I'm gonna get some more oil and top it off so I can prime the oil.

That (the only doing 500-1000 miles bit) does make sense. And a safeguard against being (less - compared to a big filter) starved of oil on start up if the filter is dry.

Pan or filter?
Well worth whipping the filter off and filling it before first start up.
