I saw this truck today and actually talked to the man who owned it. He told me a curious bit of information that I wasn’t sure was accurate.

He told me that in the gmt400 trucks, GM NEVER ACTUALLY made a true 3/4ton truck. He claimed that they were either 6 lug with 3500 suspension or 8lug with 3500 suspension.

Is this true? I thought the frames were different between the two as well making them completely different. Didn’t the 2500 have a thinner frame?

6 lug light duty 2500 had a 1/2 ton frame with a few extra gussets, more leaf’s and beefier torsion bar.
8 lug 2500 had a beefier frame, some have said it’s a heavier gauge frame for 3500, but I’ve also heard it’s not. I can’t confirm that though.

The GM upfitter guide would probably have the definitive answer....but I would figure the 3500 especially the long boys and duallies, would have the thickest frames. I could measure my CCLB in the morning....last time I was under it , the frame looks fairly sturdy.

I don’t doubt it. I do believe GM actually did make 3/4 ton 400’s though.

Yup I've seen quite a few of them. If I'd had six and a half grand about three years ago, I would have bought a 96 or 97 one, eclb, with a 350 and only 78K on it. And I've seen repro 2500 emblems in the LMC truck catalog, don't think they're phantom ones....
