Can't speak for everyone, but all of the gear reduction Delco starters I've used did not require shims. Actually, last one I bought had an explicit yellow warning sticker flat-out saying "do not use shims!" Just some food for thought if you decide to buy new.

Gear reduction, without a doubt. I went through several replacements before getting a new Delco gear reduction started from RA. One of the best upgrades I did. It's even quicker and quieter than my son's 2015 Z71..

This is what i used, I filed the edges of the aluminum mounting block cause they were sharp as all get out, but bolted in fine, no shims, came with new bolts, free shipping, I've been pleased. '89 5.7L block, stock flex plate, I used gear paint when installing and it fit perfectly without shims.
