If your current flat tappet cam is running fine, it's not likely to shell out just because it's a flat tappet. The cam lobes have been work-hardened and the stock cam profiles help protect them. If you rebuild the motor, then upgrade, but don't worry about upgrading until you rebuild.

If you rebuild, your heads and TBI are the limitation on your current engine. I went with a set of Vortec heads, but my next engine build will have better aftermarket heads. The Holley Sniper has some quirks and cheap parts, but runs great.

I rebuilt a 350 instead of going the Blueprint 383 route, and that saved me about $4000, but I understand that building engines isn't for everyone.

If you're not flogging the truck and only doing light towing, the factory 700R4 should work fine.
I've been reading your posts, and I believe that we think very much alike...at least as far as Harley engines go for me.

I did get the GM HT383E, so I didn't have to lose my mind over building something after all the research involved. A mildly bumped L31 would have been fine, but the 383 came with most of the necessary peripherals as well....and it works just fine with what I added for what I wanted. However, I blew up the 4L60, lol....that has its own thread somewhere.

There are quite a few threads somewhere like that, :rolleyes:

A note on the cam specs;
I was able to tune my 88 TBI 350, with Comp Cams 08-430-8 (224/224° @0.050", .525/.525", 110° LSA) to idle fairly smooth at 750RPM and pretty much up to 5000 RPM, later the engine decided to spin a rod bearing :fca5278d:. A lot of you know about that so, I'll leave it there, just saying...

Nice lift and short duration...I have to go find the cam specs for the stick I'm running in my 'soon-to-be-finished' de-tuned shovel engine.
What did you do for heads/headwork and valve sizes?
