Over here I have 3 options:
    4k for a LS1 motor+box+harness+ecu
5k for a stock replacement crate motor
And the local engine rebuilder wants 6k to rebuild my 350 :bs:

As always, LS seems like the logical answer. :jester:

He is from NewZealand, so 6k New Zealand Dollars is 3800 USD. Unless you are saying it's 6k USD??? Regardless, that's nuts!

However, I wonder how much it costs to ship the parts for the rebuild over there... there has to be some kind of justification?

I completely agree with you, but, R&R is probably booked at 12 hours. Rebuild is 24 hours. Machining $1500. All new parts $1000. At $100/hr, that adds up to $6100. That probably doesn't include shop fees (rag use, parts cleaner, shop heat, smoke break time, oil, filters, free coffee in the lobby)

The 4K and 5K options will cost more than that too. R&R labor and all the same shop fees. If you can't do it yourself, you had better have a thick wallet! I did a complete rebuild on my 7.4 this summer. I did all the work myself except for the machine work. Including all the machine shop cost, parts, and my own 'shop fees' I'm into it about $2500.

I was under the assumption that this was a parts only thing with the labor accomplished by the owner. I tend to forget not everyone is excited to pull a motor.

    Yeah thats NZD.

I got no problem yanking the motor, in fact that cost doesnt include yanking the motor. My point is who would pay a shop to rebuild when you can buy a crate motor that has brand new everything for less than the reconditioned motor.

I actually told the builder that I could buy a crate motor for less, and LS conversion even cheaper as I walked away :Boo:
