Man these were bad. Got them all rebuilt today and added my 2” lift. Two major things off my list.

How it ended up 7 hours later. I think there’s a special place in hell for people to do brake drums over and over again. They absolutely suck.

It’s a good thing I decided to install that lift today. I almost decided to wait a week or two, but it only took me a little less than an hour, and these U-bolts were done.

How it started….yes, that pics fell out. It’s what has been making a screeching noise yesterday I’d guess.

If the drums fit...they're worn-out. I'd expect that adjuster to be screwed-in almost all the way.
It was once I fit the drum on. That was just after fighting to get all the parts on. LOL

Not sure what you mean. There is grease on the spots on the drum where the shoes sit. There is anti-seize where needed. Other than that, it’s a complete job. Believe me I spent 8 hours wire brushing, scrubbing, and scraping EVERYTHING. It was a mess. It’s complete.

For clarity, that photo was taken when it was back together, not ready for road use! It was just for reference and your viewing enjoyment. Yes, all parts were lubricated and anti-seize where appropriate. I do not do drums often, if ever, so it is not my strong suit. I did learn a bit and the brakes and pedal feel are 80% better. The last drum job was on my 95 K2500. I took it to someone "reputable" and that idiot ruined my truck. It was so bad that I had to sell it and recoup some money. I vowed to get it done myself this time around. Now I could do one side in about an hour as long as the springs cooperate LOL

I will most likely check adjustment here in a month or two by talking drums off, adding more AS to the adjuster and then letting it be for the foreseeable future. I am going to search doing a disc upgrade if it is available. Anyone here done this?

There's been information posted on GMT400.

The good disc retrofits aren't cheap; the cheap ones aren't good.

Most of them are NOT for the 8.5" rears with 11" drums (these have a different bolt pattern on the axle flange for the backing plates than the 10" drums). All I can figure is the 11" drums work well enough that people aren't itching to replace them, so a special "kit" with the necessary bolt pattern isn't as popular.

The 10" brakes are notorious for their problems, and there are kits for them as well as the 14-bolt rears.

@Schurkey's made a number of posts regarding the cheap retrofits. Here's one:

I have too, here's one:

^ agree with this albeit most of the good cheap ones are using factory stuff and arent heavily talked about either. i dislike the majority of the offered "kits" mostly due to fact that they offer real no advantage over a properly working drums. that doesnt take into depth any of the low drag stuff that shurkey has beaten to death.
