GM never intended for the radios (or the trucks) to last 25 or 30 years. I expect that is one reason GM has never made a truck as good. Stuff like this will fail over time and should be thought of as part of the infamous "Two new truck payments a year in maintenance and it will run forever".
I personally like the middle of the dash conversion for a modern blue tooth radio that will also handle the phone hands free. That is such a safety item that in my opinion it is worth it but I also understand that some folks like the original look. I understand that a modern radio can be had that fits the factory slot, but it is very expensive.
In your case the DeOxit will likely do the job. I would not be surprised if your dash and column speakers are also pretty shot as mine were. Changing those will improve the sound greatly. Let us know how this comes out and good luck !
