Yeah, I think it was to give the Squarebodies a common look with the new GMT-400s.

The 87s were a crossover year that used up the old parts while bringing in the new model. They had the new grill/ headlights and the TBI motors etc.

They don't use up old parts. It's planned. The grills won't fit the other truck, they're just styled similarly. Also, 87 was all Squarebody.

Squares ran through 91 in Burbs, Blazers and crewcabs. The quad horizontal light setup shown above will retrofit back to 81 pretty easy, 80 and older requires more work but can be done. I *think* the quad lights were an option in 88 and 89, but for sure they were standard in 90 and 91

88-91 the small quads are what you got on the higher trim packages. The base models got the single sealed beams like the W/T. I still see a few of these old Burbs around,beat on but still truckin'.
My 90 Burb was an SLE, so it had the quads.
