Hi Folks, I was unsuccessful searching threads so forgive me if this is old. I have a stock 1989 Scottsdale with the original 16x7 4x4 wheels (Hollander replacement 1618) The clear coat is starting to peel again around the center cap. I had these wheels restored about 8 years ago and they were beautiful. Is the original center cap the culprit here? dis-similar metals perhaps? I have been searching for a replacement 2 5/8" center cap that is all plastic without the metal cover, but no luck. Anything I have found has the prongs on the inside at a larger diameter and don't fit these wheels. Anyone have a fix for this (without buying aftermarket wheels) Thanks for your input

I think that the clearcoat just deteriorates on the GM aluminum wheels after a number of years. Especially on edges like around the hub cap like you're seeing. The clear coat is paint, and it ages like paint does. I have clearcoat peel beginning on my Burb, front fender and top of doors. Where the sun hits it every day. Best thing to do is strip it and repaint. Very time consuming, but results are usually good. Some members have stripped their wheels and polished them too. Takes time but they look great.
