New to the forum. My project is a restore of my late sons 96 Sierra 2wd extended cab 5.7. We lost him at age 22 in 2019 in a work place accident. Myself and his brothers want to preserve his truck (The General), handed down to him from my father. So this is a passion project for us.

Anyway my first phase is to get it back road worthy and my mechanic is telling me that the ABS pump is out. With the replacement parts situation I am thinking that a ABS delete leading to a full new brake system later on in the process. So am I correct in that a proportioning valve? along with an upgraded master cylinder is the best initial route to get the truck on the road. I am not necessarily looking for the inexpensive route as nce finished the truck will be used to pull boats and trailers.

Thanks For Help And Direction
Scott

The delete was pretty simple for me. I went with a 2006 tahoe etc master cylinder and a proportioning valve that was for front disc and rear drum. The rear brake line makes it to the new valve, but the front's will need to be made. Get the little tool they sale on amazon that will lock your valve in place while you do your bleeding. Replace the soft lines too

What you're considering is a modification, not a restoration.

If you can't find a functional ABS unit, you'll need a replacement combination valve including proportioning valve, safety switch, and metering/holdoff valve.

A "proportioning valve" by itself is NOT a proper substitute.

along with an upgraded master cylinder
Is this a 1500 with low-drag front calipers? If so, the typical master cylinder swap is a DOWN-grade. The GMT800-style master cylinder cannot work properly with low-drag front calipers.

Low-drag front calipers REQUIRE a three-chamber, stock-style master cylinder.

Thank you for the info. Not sure how to tell it has low drag calipers or not. When I was referring to restoration I meant the whole truck. The brakes are just phase 1

Look at the SPID sticker in the glovebox area. JB5/JN5 or JB6/JN6 brakes use low-drag calipers. That includes practically ALL the 1500-series trucks. JN3 were also low-drag, but discontinued after '91 or so.

"Restoration" implies that the truck is returning to as-new condition. "Modification" implies that the truck is being either improved or degraded from the as-new condition.
