I'm Awesome
Just thought I would show you guys the progress on the new front exhaust section on my 97. The cats were wasted and the factory front exhaust tubing had been butchered into a couple of times and I decided to start over with an inexpensive stainless mandrel bent tubing kit. The bends in the $100 tubing kit were not perfect but alot better than most muffler shop compression bends. Waiting on a pair of Genuine GM AFS105 02 sensors and pair of 2.5" collector gaskets. I am ditching the donuts Thorley used and just going to use a thick copper collector gasket. I also need to visit my local muffler shop to have a ~15° bend put in a piece of the 3" straight pipe. The 45° bend the tubing kit I bought came with is much too sharp and I do not feel like messing with the unibends. I have used less than half the kit so lots of tubing left over for future projects. Also going to have a pair of 02 bungs added for the widebands.
The Thorley head pipes that came with the headers while dirty and the coating not in great shape are still solid inside and out. Only took about 3-4 hours laying on my back over a couple of days to remove the old stuff, get everything setup the way I wanted and more or less done. I have since re-installed the torque converter shield as well. I had it off because it had a slight bend in it and was dragging the converter bolts at random times, about gave the chills when I first heard it. When I get it back on the road, I will take it to an exhaust shop and have most of the exhaust welded up.
The cats will stay clamped and so will the pipes off the Thorley head pipes. I will move a couple of the better clamps to the muffler as well. I like exhaust systems somewhat modular to where sections can easily be removed if needed.
3" dual from the headers all the way to the muffler again. Previously had 2.5" high flow cats in the center of the factory 3" tubing. The 2.5" cats were plenty for the old 350 at the time and I already had them when they went on.
Burned out old cats
