For a moment they treated me with great suspicion, asked me some weird questions, then told me to go have a seat while they checked some things.

I got a weird vibe from them.. made me wonder, what the hell? Is the truck stolen or something and they're getting ready to come cuff-and-stuff me?

Nope. But there's problems with the title that the seller made NO MENTION OF.. so I had to fill out another form. Then, they happily took my money and gave me plates and a registration sticker. I guess we'll see in a few weeks if they liked my clueless answers on the form and decide to grant me a title.

I f'in swear I hate dishonest people, but it seems like that's the majority these days.
I hate people for this. Happened to me when I transferred my 03 mustang GT from out of state years ago. I was at the licensing office for well over an hour despite being required to make an appointment. They were having all sorts of issues but being very vague. They eventually went out to the car to verified the color and vin number both on the dash and door. I asked why and they said "Since it's a border state, we get a lot of stolen stuff from Canada." I swore the car was hot and I was getting cuffed. Turns out the car has a branded title the PO mentioned nothin about... People...

Maybe some good news for you though, I found out it was rebuilt right at the office. The problems they were seeing had to do with the accident (in New Mexico-2008) and lack of paperwork... But they are the ones who told me that, and the paperwork I had to fill out was state specific pertaining to damage, repair, and current appearance of the vehicle. Maybe no news from this standpoint is good news?

Ok same thing as a salvage title. That's what my state calls a branded title. I figured it would be the same thing but never hurts to ask.
We'll see. I'm tempted to spend the $45 to pull a carfax on it.. or maybe be a sucker and do the $60 for 2 deal and run Critter as well just out of curiosity.

I love how the tax office can give me a bunch of grief but refuses to give me ANY specifics when I asked them.

Some pieces of info to the title mystery. I checked out the NICB.org (National Insurance Crime Bureau) and strangely, their limited report says there's no theft records, no total loss records. WTH?

So I paid a few bucks for a trial membership on the Bumper app, which I've seen people use to check theft and accident records. Here's where it gets kinda weird.

"No accidents found"

"No salvage records found"

Two "possible theft records" reported, both on the same date - 01/25/2024 and status says "inactive"

"No service and repairs found"

Ownership history
#1 New 10/1993 Big Spring, TX N/A Wheeler Motor Company Inc, Stanton Tx
#2 Used 01/2013 San Angelo, TX N/A Unidentified Seller

"1 title brand reported"
Owner Retained 04/05/2024 TEXAS State 32

The title brand record simply says "owner retained" - there is NO damage report, nothing. All of the checkboxes for crash, vandalism, flood, recovered theft, are blank. It just says "owner retained"

What the hell..

Any idea what that even means? I've never heard that term before.
Found this:

"Owner Retained" on a car report means that the vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company, but the owner chose to keep possession of the car instead of selling it for salvage, resulting in a reduced insurance payout and a special title designation indicating the car's status as "owner retained.".

Key points about "Owner Retained":
  • Total Loss Situation:
This term is used when a car is damaged so severely that the repair cost exceeds its market value, making it a total loss in the eyes of the insurance company.

  • Choice to Keep the Car:
Despite being considered a total loss, the owner can choose to keep the damaged vehicle, which is referred to as "owner retained".

  • Reduced Insurance Payout:
When an owner chooses to retain the vehicle, the insurance company will deduct the estimated salvage value of the car from the total loss settlement amount they would otherwise pay.

  • Special Title:
Depending on the state, the car may receive a specific title designation like "salvage-retained" or "owner-retained" which indicates its history as a total loss vehicle that the owner kept.
So if an owner gets his vehicle back after a theft, it is noted as “Owner Retained”? Or a mistake on report?
