Well the resolution was not crazy expensive in the end. The service station replaced the master cylinder, but even then it was not allowing the clutch to fully disengage. They then tried one of the complete pre-bled master-slave units mentioned in this thread and that has worked. The mechanic said he had seen this kind of thing before.
I can only speculate that maybe the clutch in this older vehicle (or maybe the age of the clutch itself) requires more than the "standard" amount of force to disengage, and this unit provides that. Anyway, clutch works just fine now!
