been away for a bit but still driving my 1st one with the 8.1/nv4500 and love it .

i hooked up my buddys trailer friday night and headed out sat am for another project saved from scrap . scored a parts truck i was thinking but after looking it all over i am not so sure . . . 2 options . option one make a big boy truck like the one in the pic minus stacks and tool box . yes its a monroe 4x4 truck and i might try and do that by building my own axle . 2nd option is i have a holmes 480 split boom wrecker unit that will fit on here real nice . the truck is 135.5 cab to axle so both options are perfect for the frame length .

the truck was a ex-police truck from the nyc area years ago . it shows 20,*** miles but its missing the 454/4L80-e combo . so options are wide open at this point . . . anyone got any more pics saved of these as a big boy toy ? that would be more helpful at this point . but the wrecker option would be cool also and useful .

What year is that one?

A Duramax/Allison swap? Or maybe a 8.1/Allison? I was wondering the other day if the Allison would bolt up on those trucks? On regular pick-up trucks the Allison seems to hit the trans. tunnel, but the 3500HD has a deeper frame, shifting the cab line upward, right?

Nice score BTW!

Yeah the HD cabs sit a bit higher and allow room for the allison. Mine is the 8.1L/4L80E, bought it non running and cheap.

Its a little hard starting, I am going to upgrade the timing cover, chain and cam sensor to the 2004 version... guess the '01-03 cam gears are flaky and you can get a lot of crank/no starts.

I would love to shorten the frame and do an 8' bed like that white truck.. that is cool.

check fuel pressure first . the newer stuff 96-up get real funky on fuel pressure .

I need to find a 3500HD to do a C7/Allison swap. Would love to turn one into a "big boy toy", as you put it. Seen some for sale on auction sites, but they're pricey for their condition.

@sweetk30 Since this post moved to the top, I don't have a 'Big Boy' truck, but I do have my hobby wrecker to show you.

1998 3500HD with a Nomar 810 wrecker and 6000 lb. wheel lift. I added the auto loader (Duel-Tech) to the Nomar wheel lift.

so i found a 05 doner 2500 with the 8.1L / allison 5speed auto with 101,998 miles on it for a deal .

i have been getting other parts around like the factory bolt on frame plates for under the cab / bed area i got a super clean set with hardware for 300 bucks local . getting closer to doing the full build swap combo and cant wait .

looks like the allison / 4.63 / 32" tire combo will be 2415 rpm @ 70mph . . not bad at all as my current 3500-HD with 8.1L / nv4500 is 2550 rpm .

So still getting parts with other life projects . .

Scored a allison 5speed with correct tailshaft mounted parking brake for use in these trucks and my conversion . Come with all the stuff to bolt on a gm 8.1L also to help make my swap go faster .
