You can pull the adapter without dropping the oil, but you will lose some, make sure you have an extra quart to top it back off.

Hello,

I am new to the forum and am in the process of changing this right now. I have drained the oil and removed the filter. I got the two bolts on the bottom of the housing off and its still stuck to the block. I would prefer not to mess with the lines because they arent leaking. any help would be appreciated.

Good writeup.. Mine was leaking a year or two ago, and me being stupid, i tried to tighten those bolts down while the truck was turned on...... Bad idea, I broke a bolt off inside the block and hot oil shot all over the driveway and me. Man, gotta love being a stupid teen. Later fixed it the proper way.

How to: Replace your Oil cooler adapter gasket & o-rings

You must be registered for see images
If your Oil cooler adapter is leaking like the one above don't worry its simple fix.

Here are the item needed to replace the gaskets:

Felpro gasket set # ES72671
De-greaser (optional)
Scraper to remove old gasket
1/2 inch socket and ratchet
Pick (if removing oil cooler lines)
Flat head screwdriver

Removal:

Step 1: Clean and degrease the adapter and surrounding area. (Not always necessary, but I like a clean engine)

Step 2: Drain the oil and remove the oil filter and drain for a few mins.

Step 3: (This is step optional, I wanted to clean the oil filter adapter and replace the o-rings on the oil cooler lines) Carefully remove the plastic keepers and slide them back, then use a pick to pull the c-clamp off and pull the line out of the adapter.

Step 4: Remove the 2 (1/2 inch) bolts holding the oil filter adapter on and separate the adapter from the engine

Step 5: Remove the o-ring and scrap away the old gasket

Installation:

Step 1: Replace the o-rings inside the oil cooler line fittings on the adapter

Step 2: Install the large o-ring and gasket (a little petroleum jelly will help the gasket stay in place)

Step 2: Install the adapter with 2 (1/2 inch) bolts

Step 3: Install the lines into the adapter.

Step 4: Install a NEW oil filter & engine oil

Finished! I hope this guide helped you fix your leak!
i keep telling myself i newed to do this next oil change but keep forgetting

Earlier, you talked about removing the oil cooler lines: "Pick" etc..

Do you have photos of how to do this?? These push-in connectors have me baffled...

Thanks!

What would be the harm in this ? I bought a 97 recently and the radiator is leaking, oil cooler lines have evidence of a leak, and the cooler adapter housing is leaking. I'm considering getting a radiator with no cooler and plugging the holes in the adapter housing. I have a Duramax to pull/work with; this is just a ride around truck- no towing at all. If so, what is the thread on the fittings at the adapter ?

Plug 'em if your not towing/riding it hard. Not totally sure on the fittings
