In a stress test I would bet on the straps over the cables (though the connecting rivets may give first). So does anyone know if the top fastener (connects strap to bedside) is different than the one for the cables?

It's been a literal couple of decades since I converted a truck from cables to straps, but IIRC, the bolt that the strap hooks over is different. The slot is a little bit wider. Mind you I could be remembering it wrong, but it seemed like I had to get the bolts, too.

I think the cables had a recall many years ago. I think I remember my dad getting new ones, for his 96 that way. I might have replaced one or both of mine, but I don't recall for sure. It seems like one of mine started to fray.

I've always wanted the steel straps because thats what I grew up with, when my dad had a 76 Dodge D100.
I think the changeover happened in the early 90s, but I figure it depends on what plant the truck was built in. I've seen '91s that had cables and '93s with straps; both looked original, but with trucks in the wrecking yard, who knows for sure?
I know the square body Suburbans had cables....and those power window tailgates are some kinda heavy! Prolly 200# or more, just for the complete gate, without any load or someone sitting on it! We had to work on those gates on a couple of our square body Burbs, and replaced at least one set of cables.

My 91 has straps, but that maybe a stepside thing as well for that year.

I think my dad's 90 GMC had cables. The 90 was the first truck, after the 76 Dodge, so cables stood out to me as being new and high tech (that seems funny now).

I'll have to see if he remembers. I don't even know where that truck was built.
