I'm having an issue with my 1988 Chev silverado 4 x 4 5.7 gas pick-up> service eng. soon light comes on may be for a few miles, goes out & may not come back on until I drive pickup next, if I shut eng off light is off when I restart & drive for a few miles & situation begins again.. the engine sometimes (stumbles>lurches) sometimes it will die & start right up again, a couple of times it had to set for 15-20 minutes & several restart attempts before retarting then good til next time I drive it. spark plug wires have been changed, new egr valve installed, new gas filter, replaced distibuter cap & rotor, ignition module, fuel pressure was tested to be @12 psi in repair shop... have cleaned battery terminals/cables & problem continues awaiting to be back into shop.. any ideas?? thanks

You need to check the codes. On an 88 you can jump 2 pins on the ODB1 connector and watch the flashing lights.

My 89 had the same symptoms as yours and it turned out to be a vacuum line that came unplugged. I got a code 33 which if I remember correctly is the MAP sensor error. Popped off the air cleaner and and saw the vac hose sitting there next to the MAP sensor.
