I got the truck (96 K1500 RCSB) inspected last week but it failed because the third brake light didn't function. I took the brake light/cargo lamp assembly off and noticed lots of green on the plastic, so I assumed corrosion. When I pulled the 921 brake light bulbs out, the metal contacts broke off, so that means more corrosion. I did some searching here on the forum and found that this is a pretty common problem, the original circuit board doesn't seem available, and that aftermarket LED replacements (or getting lucky at a junkyard) are the only options. I did test that the connector gives me the +12V on one of the 4 pins.

I also learned that there was some wiring relationship between the dome lamp and the third brake light/cargo lamp reading the forums. I figured I'd look into why my dome light doesn't work while at it. Since I can't find any diagrams for my 96, would I need to look at the 95 or 98 manuals? The 95 manual doesn't seem to match what I see, but the 98 seems about right. Right now I'm seeing +12V on each side of the bulb socket, which obviously won't make it light up, but I need to check all the switches and sockets to see what is good. Thankfully, this is a factory harness and no one has ever touched it.

Any ideas

Howdy,

Did you check in the "Engines" section of this forum, at the top in the sticky posts? There's a whole lot of scanned manuals in there; I can't recall which ones may be missing but most should be there.

If you've got power at your CHMSL but dead at the dome light, my first instinct would be to check the wiring under the driver door sill plastic. Often dirt and small rocks that get ground in underneath past the weatherstrip can damage it. Mind you most of it runs in a plastic channel that protects it, but damage can happen at either end where it exits the channel.
