Just know that when testing these components they may test fine. But once the vehicle is at operating temp the issue will rear itself. The symptom I had was I had a very intermittent shut off (twice and both when driving). It was as if someone reached over and turned the key off. Put it in park and it would fire right up. Replaced the pick up coil and no more shut off. This it what it looked like after pulling....https://www.gmt400.com/attachments/20190515_220427-1-jpg.390426/

After pulling the distributor look the reluctor/stator magnet over very carefully for any crack/s.
Thank you and your link didn't work.

This happened to me, intermittent engine shut-off at any speed. Put it in neutral and it would restart, drop in drive and repeat the next time it shut-off. Tried troubleshooting, parts replacements but nothing worked. I finally thought it might be a fuel delivery issue. I found the fuel pump ground wire on top of the left frame member. Cleaned the connector and frame with a wire brush and reinstalled. Have not had the problem since. Good luck.

Ok I redid the ground and it worked for about a day. But it died twice on me before I made it home once on Interstate and the other on regular highway. I looked at distributor and took cap off I did not see anything out of the ordinary. I'm at a loss on this. I took electric fans off too put clutch fan back on still same thing. I did notice something though when I cleaned the ground for the fuel pump it ran longer than before.

Mine had the intermittant die, until one day on the road it would not restart after I hit a good bump.
I cleaned bolt and frame with wire brush and brake clean.
I replaced original connector with gold-plated one, I put copper anti-seize on bolt and all over connector (to try to keep road salt off, plus it is conductive); it has been fine since.

yes i did the same but not the gold plated connector. i might have to run a fuel pressure gauge in the truck to see what it does when it dies.

alright some new info after reading around online and my own diagnoses. I tried to get codes and the service light wont flash the dtc 12 so i was checking out that schematic and i will try to get to that tomorrow. but I let it idle and it dies and the fuel pressure doesn't drop right away it holds it before dropping and i also noticed a miss on the wires as i pulled them and noticed a weird mark on the cap. it doesn't have a line all the way through the fittings. its only on one side which is causing the miss fire so i will replace the cap with the extra one i have then I will start diagnosing the ecm for the dtc not flashing.

Question regarding these words:

"I tried to get codes and the service light wont flash the dtc 12"

In previous posts used the number 12 referring to your fuel pressure, and you refer to fuel pressure in the above post.

This is first time you mentioned "dtc 12".

In that sentence above where you mention "dtc 12", are you talking about Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 12, or something about fuel pressure ?

Is the situation that you don't have a scan tool and are retrieving codes using the blinking of the check engine light method ? Just curious.

A decent quality scan tool is recommended because, of course, as it's relatively easy and quick to work with.

I'm not familiar with pre-Vortecs myself, so I can offer only generic advice and/or reasoning.

When it dies and fuel pressure holds, then drops, how far does it drop ?

I would post good closeup pics of things you think "look weird", as others may be able to see something in pics that might help.

When you cross over the terminals on dlc it is supposed to blink pause then blink blink representing 12 showing the light and dlc working. My service engine soon light is not working now. Whether i put in the code reader or the paperclip. There are no codes for the fuel pump. I'm just trying to get the light working which is funny because I replaced all the dash light with led. It worked before so problem another wire problem. So is the scantool https://www.cartooldeal.com/product...Zd_itg1vVzSiRrhdZ7GM-FYpeoZFDK-AaAiadEALw_wcB the one I need?
