OBD I which is the system your truck uses, does not require any scan tool to read or clear codes. You can clear them with a momentary battery disconnect as mentioned earlier. You can read them using a paper clip -> https://www.troublecodes.net/gm/#access

You'll first see blinks that equate to a code 12 (normal) - flash, flash-flash. It will do this a total of 3 times, then move on to the next code, which will flash 3 times, then the next, until it comes back around to code 12 again. That way you know you've seen all the codes. Write them down as you go then check them against the list and let us know what you have.

But sorry where is the OBD? I think the 1989 have not..
