So I'm installing new boots on my CV axles for my 96 K1500. When I pop the ball bearings out of the cages the outer cage comes out of the housing. My understanding is the outer cage is supposed to remain in the housing, isn't it? I've never had the outer cage come out before.

Regardless, I can't get it back in. I'm thinking the joint may be worn enough to allow that to happen?

In my non-GMT400 CV experience (I've never torn apart a GMT400 CV), once you remove the ball bearings all the pieces in the cup can come out. It's a royal pain getting it all back in when it's new and tight. They always seem to fall apart easy but require hammering and cursing to get back together. Except my son's Altima. That crap was wore out. It practically fell back together.
