There's a public truck scale in east Houston, on the East Freeway (I -10) and McCarty. $9 and their reviews are pretty good. This is not too far from the Port of Houston; any semi tractor/trailer setup you want, you'll see it in this area!

License plates in Texas are done by vehicle weight now. Too many people were registering trucks, SUVs and vans as cars to get the cheapest plates fees. Yes we did that too...it was a lot cheaper which is why people were doing it!
When we moved from Merrill Oregon to Los Banos CA I had to get a scale ticket for my 84 Dodge W150 (was ~5500#) to register it in CA. Back then (in 85) you could register it as a car but then, you couldn't legally haul anything other than a jack and a spare tire.

What the heck! I've never hear of this! LOL. What an absurd law!

In Pa you could register Suburban's and vans that had a rear seat as station wagons. They changed the law and you had to register them as trucks

People used to regularly register Suburbans, vans, and trucks as "cars" in Texas, because truck registration was based on weight and carrying capacity, and was more expensive. Then the DMV finally got wise to this, and changed all vehicle registration to weight based.
