Crate GM L31 Pricing

GM does or did produce a new replace stock engine at 383 for 96 (vortec) V8's and later. Can't use it in 95 and earlier.

HT383e I think is what they call it and I remember seeing it available at summit. They (GM) claims a tune is not mandatory but recommended.

The HT383 without the “e” designation was for the pre vortec trucks.

That's the performance model. There was a stock replacement version, at least there was when I was shopping around for a new engine for my 93 K1500 GMC. Right now not sure,so I'll take look.

If you're buying a car or a house, definitely time the market. An engine? If you need it you need it. So long as prices aren't stupid-high, buy. $4000 is high, but not stupid high. For the money, I'd buy a Blueprint engine before an GM.

Read the fine print with the GM crate, they give a warranty IF a certified installer installs it. Check out west coast engines, they offer a warranty if You do it in Your garage.

Read up on the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. This can't be a stipulation of a warranty. Of course, anything can happen with a sufficient application of lawyers. If they give you a bum engine and a reputable, but not "certified" shop installs it, they won't warranty it until you hire a lawyer. Then they'll throw a motor at you to keep from having to pay their lawyers, but you're already out the money for yours.

To give you an idea of costs, I rebuilt my L29 this summer. Had a machine shop do the labor on the block and heads. that part was $1600. I provided all internal parts, cam and valve train, gaskets, rings, bearings, etc. added larger injectors, headers, new clutch assembly, distributor, PS pump, plugs and wires, sensors, filters, Blackbear tune, oil, all the little things that add up. Ended up around $6500 parts and machine shop cost when all done.

This is great information. This is what the cost I'm trying to avoid and why I am thinking about going the crate motor direction. While all that sounds great, I just don't really need it for my purposes at the moment.

Besides the leaks, what makes you think its tired? Like GoToGuy said, as long as compression is within 10psi between cylinders and you have at least 10 or 15psi oil pressure when hot and idling you have plenty of life left in it.

Maybe I missed it but how many miles are on it? These can go 350k+ miles if they are maintained well.

Last summer I needed a L31Hd for a 99 K2500. There were none to be found. GM canceled all the back orders and started over. My installer found one at dealership in California that the customer had backed out on. I paid $4000 shipped to MN. For warranty reasons I also had to replace the radiator because of the built in oil cooler possibly having metal in it. think I had $6300 into after installation and misc expenses. 3 year 100k warranty.
