Getting ready to pull my 5.7 vortec engine only, leaving the trans in the 97 Suburban.
I have a head gasket leak into cylinder #4 so i figured might as well have the heads redone, new lifters, and a new timing set done at 220k miles.
I have the harbor freight 2 ton hoist and a adjustable engine leveler.
Any tips on pulling it out? I'm leaving the front end together. I already pulled the radiator and got the power steering out of the way. Just the torque converter bolts and engine mounts are holding it in.
Also does anyone know what size and length bolts I need to attach the motor to the engine stand?

The bolts should be 3/8"-16, length will vary depending on the stand but 3/4" is about how much engagement is needed. That being said I have never liked the 4 arms on the stand. I build alot of chevy stuff and have a good stand with this guy.

That sounds good.

These photos may help you for the bolts. I couldn't find mine in my garage so I used bolts from my SAE stash and other stuff to make it work in a pinch...of course, later on I found the bolts.

I have the HF engine stand.

Are you removing the engine to change those items only? I'm pretty sure you can change that with the engine in the vehicle...but if it's out, might as well inspect and change other stuff if needed.

Thanks guys. I just think it's easier to work on a 350 in the garage and on a engine stand. Gonna be changing the rear main and oil pan gasket too.
Does the transmission have to be pulled backwards or can I just pull the engine forward and up? I still have the driveshaft connected and want to mess with the transmission the least as possible.

You can leave the trans mounted. But keep the front supported. It'll just flop down when the engine comes away from it. Breaking your trans mount all other sorts of fun.

And you'll to jack the front of trans up slightly to help aid in getting engine out and back in.
