Can't Turn Off Alerts

So I've been having trouble lately with my account and getting alerts for seemingly every new thread that's started. I went to my alert preferences and unchecked everything, but it didn't help. I can't figure out why I keep getting the alerts or how to turn them off. Everything else seems to be working fine, it just gets annoying when I haven't been on here in a little bit and have to sift through everything to find updates on threads I was actually following. Any Ideas?

do you have your watched threads set to send notifications?

I did before, but have unchecked everything. Didn't seem to help. I didn't get an alert for this thread, which I'm watching, but have gotten some for some new threads that got started which I am not watching.
