I'm suspecting that your wheel bearing adjustment uses a plain nut, and a stamped-steel castellation that goes over the top. At least, that was common for AMC, Ford and Chrysler for years.Having "free play" in my Mustang's front hubs gave me 1/8" looseness in the toe adjustment. Tightening to the next flat gave me pre-load. Between toe change and pre-load, I went with pre-load.

Don't back-off the nut an entire flat. Move the castellation piece on the nut until it lines up so that you back off the nut a half-flat or less.
