can i replace front bearings without hub 97 chevy c1500?

Having "free play" in my Mustang's front hubs gave me 1/8" looseness in the toe adjustment. Tightening to the next flat gave me pre-load. Between toe change and pre-load, I went with pre-load.
I'm suspecting that your wheel bearing adjustment uses a plain nut, and a stamped-steel castellation that goes over the top. At least, that was common for AMC, Ford and Chrysler for years.

Don't back-off the nut an entire flat. Move the castellation piece on the nut until it lines up so that you back off the nut a half-flat or less.

Doh! I'm confusing my Mustang with something else I've done wheel bearings on. I'm familiar with the nut you posted, and I know to rotate to another castellation. My Mustang has Ford's stupid cheesy and cheap spindle nut made of thin nuts covered in a thin cage - if tightens to whatever you tighten it to, but self-locks so you can't back it off. It may have been my truck that I was getting that steering play in, or maybe my wife's 300. I still stand by my decision to go tighter rather than have steering play.
