Don't tempt me, I want to keep it a diesel but a complete 8.1L with the full harness out of an 02 3500HD is for sale about an hour and a half away.
I want a Duramax in this truck but having a 454 and a 496 is extremely appealing.

It is Friday night. I bet the people with the 8.1 will be up for another 1.5 hrs. :)

I think a basically stock early Duramax would be a nice engine to have. Swap the injectors before swapping the engine in a make a few basic air flow modifications and drop it in.

Then bolt this on.

Big money though, damn.
Yeah they're proud of their products. $8,000 for a complete twin screw setup isn't bad though. It's a lot of money, but no more than the other offerings.
Raylar has the market cornered on 8.1L products but damn it's a good corner.

An LB7 or an LLY is probably what's going to get swapped in, just a basic rebuild with a few upgrades addressing the problem areas and drop it in. One upside to having a DBW 6.5 already in the truck is a lot of the wiring is still the same as the Duramax engines.

Definitely cooked the starter a couple weeks ago, been strapped for cash and since this truck doesn't owe me anything it's been sitting. Got a starter coming from a buddy and I ordered a new set of starter bolts from Quadstar, now all I need is for the weather to cooperate and I can get some work done to this pile

Starters are pretty easy at least on the 6.5. I remember in ancient history having to swap mine out in a parking lot at the parts shop the morning of a funeral... they are heavy as hell though!

The weather hasn't been cooperating and since I can't move the truck anywhere I've had to play the waiting game. And since I ordered ARP starter bolts I probably won't do anything until I get those in so I can knock the job out in one go.

Finally got the starter pulled, going to pick up the new one from my buddy tomorrow so hopefully I can get the truck to the shop Monday.
I think I may have stripped out the side post trying to remove the cables, so I'll grab an extended bolt tomorrow and hopefully that fixes it. Has anyone seen a decent top post adapter for side post cables? Similar to what @DanteGTZ has on the Black Fox?

Got the new starter in, as well as a military style top post to move some cables off of the side, truck cranks good now; I think it needs a glowplug relay and new wires though.

Had the truck running for a minute and the damn thing started running out of fuel, so I have 5 gallons and some fuel treatment to put it; dropping it off either Monday or tomorrow for a new sender and then hopefully I can get a full tank of fuel in it.
