The most likely scenario is the one I proposed, because it has happened, and will continue to happen, through whatever means can facilitate it. An online argument gets someone with poor emotional control riled up and they decide to "find out who you are" - next thing you know you're getting pizza deliveries you didn't ask for. Or much worse, victim of a SWATting attack (look it up.) This is what I mean by "pester you from afar" - that type of nonsense.

As far as what info you can get from a license plate, in Texas, if you have the means to run the plate you get all the info the DMV has on them. Full name, home address, any lienholder information (the means I used to have for looking up plates, legally, was for repo purposes - but it was a publicly accessible database), how much they paid for the vehicle, if the registration was up to date, etc.

So it's one thing if someone in traffic decides you pissed them off and they want to bend/break the law to hunt you down and do something stupid that might land them in jail or in a hole in the ground. That's not the person I'm talking about. I'm talking about the guy online that acted like a **** so you called him one, and now he's out to annoy you, from however many states away he might live. In his mother's basement.

But private citizens (law abiding non ********* criminals) can't just "run your plate" to dig up info on you. I'm in the first camp. If some one, or some group wants your plate for doxxing, or cloning to avoid tolls or use for illegal activities, they're going to get it regardless of me hiding it online. If they have access to get my info from a pic of my plate, they likely have the gear to just search up my make and model and clone my plate for their "getaway car" or what have you
state motor vehicle records are supposed ot be out of reach of anyone but you or the government, but the government has volunteered our data over to private companies for years now since the 2000s deliberetly to allow end-runs around privacy rights sadly.

These companies are being hacked daily, we are getting "your data was, allegedly, mostly stolen anyway"
because they are 1) private companies routinely hacked for private data
2) The us gov at leeadt 1 year ago, not sure, uploading all its consolidated info about a driver into searchable database. because this company also sells rights to it, I think (id have to recheck)

what all this means, is you have know unknown actors already knowingly fumbling your data privacy and security, and the license plate is either easily found or could be one factor in de-anonymizing more about you. Either way, I dont recommend making it easy for someone to do that to you

A few thoughts on this and a bit of advice.
About ten years ago an idiot stops sideways in front of my truck in heavy rain. I "T boned" that Subaru so bad it looked like a fortune cookie.
This was a state highway in Washington.
When you call the cops they will ask you if anyone has been injured. They will not respond if you say their are no injuries.
And you do not know if there are injuries.
Unless you are a doctor you do not know and you are being recorded. Potential injuries is not your decision to make
You really want that police report.
Of course she had no insurance and lied to the cop and dodged my phone calls.
So a couple of years later I joined Facebook and two of the first "Friend Recommendations" where the girl driving the Subaru and the state trooper who showed up to the accident.
They only thing the three of us have in common is that accident report.
It took me about two minutes to find her entire social media profile.
Address employer family everything.
The state is obviously selling our information.
I didn't do anything about it because I didn't want to ruin some 20 year old kids life over stupid decision and bent truck bumper.
But someone else certainly could have showed up to that girls front door with bad ideas.
Another example. Back in the late 1980s I was helping some friends move and I was towing a ten foot utility trailer full of furniture and a road rage drunk got pissed off and threw a wrench at my lowered 1970 f-100 that I had just put a Merc 302 and 4 speed and just painted "Rangoon Red" it was a beautiful truck.
Skipped right across the hood and ****** up the paint. We got the guys plate number.
Well the guy who's furniture Im hauling works at a movie theater where off duty cops provide security.
Before the sun went down one of the cops gave us this guy's name, address phone number and his entire history of domestic abuse.
We waited a few days but we did go find that guy one night and reach an enforced zero option agreement with that ****.
Another friend used to work as a "Skip Tracer"
Basically chasing bad debt.
They can find you in the time it takes to eat a sandwich.
I have my ex wife signed up for so many anti fraud alerts that I get updates about what she ate for lunch.
Financial fraud is one of her hobbies.
I do not have to pay for background search services.
I only need a name and a rough location.
I can track you down from your Facebook friends list because they haven't changed their safety settings.
I can track you down from you posting to online obituaries.
I don't necessarily need to find your information if I can get your parents or great parents information and then build the tree backwards to you or your relatives who do not have their info secured.
Don't forget that every place you ever worked whoever processed that paycheck they have all of your info too.
That accountant that got arrested for embezzling money from the company?
They have a copy of your info at home.
I can find you and you can find me.
But I'm getting to be Notta *** Giving old..
The anonymous ship left the pier long ago.
But its crewed by people who are not afraid of life anymore.

The amount of information on you that is readily available for free through a simple google search is impressive. Go one layer deeper and it’s shocking. Those ads you see as you browse and the recommended video clips you see? These companies know what you are thinking and feeling before you do and your experience is custom tailored to you. If you are online, you are nothing but a walking mine of data for these companies. You don’t even need social media for them to have your data and to sell it.

Yes but the other problem is that is quite often entirely wrong.
I spent about four years online with a guy who has my same name and the internet thinks he went to the same college I did and now I am the port engineer for a major well known port in the South and he graduated from the University of Washington.
I am not the port engineer for that port
He did not go to the UW.
If you look this guy up online He has a degree in project management from Colorado.
He does not have a degree from from UW or Colorado
He Got his paper at UC Berkely.
But he was the port engineer for that that place
My degree is not from Colorado.
It's from the University of Washington.
My second degree is from the University of Denver business school but that shows up as his history.
And his history shows up as my history.
The only thing we have in common is the same name with an unusual middle name.
This is where your genealogy search is gonna **** you over.
You could find some distant cousins
They might end up being a pack of ***** and their might be a damn good reason why your ancestors cut them out of their lives

I never blur my plate out, mostly b/c I'm lonely and remain an optimist that someone will show up so we can strike up a conversation about millenial derangement syndrome.
IF ONLY they were the type to man up to pay a visit and knock on the front door. That would be a game-changer. Hell I'd probably post my contact info willingly for that.

Man up ? Men's only 0.5% of the population any more, and no Man would ever think about dox bllsht, a man handles things like a Man, when appropriate. The doxxers and those who even let doxxing suck up their precious brain time are pooosies. There always remains a little fraction of a remnant, and the distractors always get their due one way or another.

I had a local deputy show up at my house one day to serve me with collection papers. I get there & the delinquent account was somewhere I don’t owe any debts. There’s a woman here who has my first name & married a guy with my last name (who also has my brother’s first name) & it was her debt.
I also got a call about a dog the pound picked up & brought to the vet. It turned out to be hers also, & I’ve never used that vet.
People will just plug names into google & go with the first contact information they see.

Yep. And this is not a new problem either.
In 1986 I bought a van in Fresno and me and some friends were road tripping it back to Seattle
I was sleeping on the floor with my friend driving when we got pulled over in Ashland Oregon.
Keep in mind this is in 1986. Way before the internet.
The van had California plates and I had a Washington driver's license.
The guy driving had a New York license.
We had his 78 Yamaha 750 in the van which had Arizona plates.
The Oregon State troop ran his name over the radio as an Arizona driver's license number and not a New York driver's license number.
His name came back as an army deserter from the Korean war.
He's 23 years old at that time.
The title and registration were all screwed up on this van and the van was a 500 dollar POS.
The trooper took one look at my stack of paper and told me to drive that over to the gas station, fill it up and told me "get right the **** out of my state right this ******* minute"
Which is exactly what we did
When I bought this thing in Fresno It was in August and I had Pneumonia. I was pretty damn sick.
I had to drive this 66 Ford Econoline to Sacramento to pick up my friends who were going on the trip with me.
Ran it out of gas on I-5
Waved down a CHP car from the other side of the freeway.
He took the next overpass and came back around and pulled in behind me.
Looked at my paperwork disaster and decided to give me a ride to the gas station.
That's because he could spot a car guy and that was his first day driving his brand new California Highway Patrol 5 litre Police Interceptor Mustang.
I got in the passenger seat with my empty prestone bottle because I didn't have a gas can and asked him if that car was as fast as the news claimed it was.
He took me for a rip down I-5 in that brand new Mustang.
CHP cop goes out of his way and finds a twenty year old punk on the side of the road with way way expired plates and no title and no registration and an out of state license.
And said **** it, let's go for a drive
That was before police departments decided to proclaim that they have the most dangeroious job
Its logging and fishing and construction.
Some years logging wins some years fishing wins and sometimes construction wins.
Police officer is not even ******* close.
I will bring this back around to where my ex went to Mexico and I drove down the next day and she had our check book stolen and Ken Salazar then Attorney general for Arizona issued a warrant for my arrest even though I had a police report about the stolen checks.
That is when "Hans Of Germany" who was a retired U-Boat commander turned hairdresser showed up at my door and threatened to shoot me.
