I'm just moving the spring perches on the 14b this weekend and assembling new leaf packs and hanging the axle next weekend. So no, I haven't tried 4x4 yet.

And these mods are out of necessity and my next mods will be also out of necessity. Who knows what will break next and need modifications, lol.

Since the axle is out, I'm seriously considering welding the spiders.

Anybody ever do this? Which welding rod should I use? I'm thinking something with heavy penetration and possibly a 2nd pass with 7018 to clean it up.

6010 for the first pass. 7018 ?? I would just use 6010 for the second pass too. Just my opinion.

Would a mini spool hold up to the abuse this thing is going to go through?

Got the spring perches welded on and one side of the axle tube welded to the diff housing. Are my welds Kenny approved? 1/8" 7018 at 125amp DC+

The propane torches got the diff housing to 350-400F before the first weld the let it cool down with the torches on to 450 before starting the next weld. It took 3 rods for the whole diameter.

IDK, I would think so, a lot of 1/4 mile racers use them.

Looks good to me, if that matters. :waytogo: Just an FYI for anyone that didn't already know this (or even cares) - the 1st 2 numbers on the welding rod is the tensile strength so, 70 is 70,000 PSI where 60 is 60,000. The 3rd number is position, and the 4th is flux type.

Remove any scale or crusted/overheated gear lube from the inside of the axle tubes before you seal it back up.

Any particulates included carbonized lube will end up between the gear teeth or in the bearings.

Other side on the axle is done, again probably not Kenny quality but good enough for a stick welder farm fix.

After looking into it more, I'm probably going to buy one of those $120 mini spools on summit racing. Relatively cheap, easy to install and proven to hold up.

And I'm going to recover the springs out of this Chevy Blazer parts truck to replace the broken bottom short springs in the current spring pack. Go from 9 springs and take out the bottom 3 and put in these 4 to make it an even 10 :cool:
