My 2002 S10 , yes not a 400 but the same tranny, was due for a tranny service. I bought the synthetic Amsoil synchromesh fluid. I had what sounded like a noisy bearing. When the clutch pedal was released and the tranny was spinning internally there was noise, with the clutch pushed in the noise would go away. It also had a sound similar to an old truck 4 speed (SM465). All of that is gone! GONE!! GONE!!! I'm a happy camper!

Does that trans have brass syncros? Supposedly syncromesh is bad for anything but. My T56 in my Camaro has brass syncros, but the cone surface is paper so supposedly it'll eat the syncros long term.
