Air Conditioner controls. Intermittant issue with dashboard controls?

1998 K1500 5.7L. Air conditioning is charged and works great for a while, then stops and starts randomly. A new strange thing I noticed, the vent fan started blowing cold AC air last night even though the AC is not turned on (just fan running). Could this indicate that my intemittant-running AC is caused by something in the dashboard controls? Why else would I get cold AC air blowing when the AC button is not pushed or lit up?

If your vent selector is set to defrost at all, the AC compressor will run to remove moisture from the air.
