In other news, I got the heads back, flat-milled .020". I was hoping for a reduction in chamber vol of hopefully 3 cc, but maybe only 2cc. Actual number was -4 cc! Vol went from 105 to 101 on all 8. So true static compression will be 9.08:1 with a Felpro gasket. If I wanted to spend $220 on a pair of Cometic gaskets of 4.280 dia x .030 thick, comp would go up to 9.34. I'm not going to spend the money. Stock chamber vol ranged from 99 to 102cc, plus the pistons were .025 below deck, so stock comp varied from 8.8 to 9.0. Having the compression all even, plus the head and manifold flow improvements will make everything more efficient. Fuel and spark can be closer to optimum when no cylinders are approaching detonation before the others.

What was the difference on temperature between stock iat sensor location and the measured temperature inside the intake manifold?

I don't have tuning software yet to monitor sensors. It still has the stock air filter box, breathing in from the fender, so maybe 90f at the iat.

So you're saying that, with my Whippled setup, that the intake manifold is acting like an intercooler? Sweet!

I went looking for phx area shops to do thermal barrier coating on the valves. I emailed the three biggest companies for a quote and got no replies. I'm not going to beg anyone to take my money. Instead I went to work with my old buffer. Hopefully polishing will reflect heat and reduce carbon buildup. It's probably not worth the effort, but of course, I'm going to do it anyway..

Other than ceramic coated headers, I've never done engine coatings, and I haven't seen definitive proof whether or not they're snake oil.

A bottle of Techline CBC1 is $35. A Walmart toaster oven is $20. A Harbor Freight powder coating gun is $75. For $130 I'd be tempted to try it.

I have had ceramic coated intake valves that held up well in an offroad race engine, but I have no idea how much cooler they ran. I have a david Vizard book where he says on a certain engine he could see down the intake tract at wot, and could see the intakes glowing dull red. Then after ceramic coating they no longer ran red hot.

Not on the engine. My truck has had a hard life, like maybe a dump truck.. The frame rails were bent down over the axle from being overloaded. There were cracks and gouges in the rails where things had been welded on, then crudely cut off. So over the last few weeks I removed the bed (going to get repainted) straightened the frame with a railroad tie and bottle jack, and welded up the cracks. I'm also building a ladder rack on the bed before it gets painted. It's supposed to be cold this weekend so maybe I will get back to work on the engine in the shop.
