Update, heads are on, valvetrain is in. The full Comp Cams cam and valvetrain required shorter pushrods than stock, .150" shorter on the long and .100" shorter on the short. Got I great set of Trickflow 3/8 pushrods for I thought a reasonable $220. Made a crank drive plate by welding an old socket to a disk that I pulled out of the scrap bin at the laser shop I used to work at. Epoxied magnets to the block where the heads drain oil, to catch metal particles coming off the springs. The lower half of the manifold is getting .060" milled off to account for the decked block and heads. In the meantime, I practiced putting in the distributor, to get an idea of the right depth for it to go in. I may need shims to account for all the milling. Is it safe to assume that the dist housing is in the right place, or close enough to run, when the cap is square to the block? The whole cam retard timing thing has me worried.

Looking at your pic mine would be turned a little clockwise about 1/4in from the intake manifold. As long as the rotor is installed properly it will run.

Thanks sent! Spare, when do I need to worry about the cam retard/relearn or whatever it is?

As long as its close it will be alright. You can set it right after it starts if you can then check it again later.

Hey Scott, message me your email, I’ll send you a short video clip I took and used to set my distributor. It got me within 6*. You will need to shim your distributor height due to the block and head surfacing. I used a pack that had 3 nylon in it, .030, .060, .100. I think I got in on Amazon. add, but don’t count the thickness of the felt gasket in the overall stack. You want about .020 - .025 gap off the oil pump drive so it does not bind. Gordon

Things are moving right along. I painted all the brackets and suspension parts, put energy susp poly bushings in the lower arms, along with Proforged ball joints. Got the Bosch 36 lb/hr injectors from 5-0 installed, engine is buttoned up and ready to go into the frame. I'm half way done with the connector wiring for the 0411 swap.

So now is the big decision, what to do for the tune. I could buy HP Tuners and download a L29 tune from their forum, then spend months fine tuning it. Or I could send the 0411 to black bear, and get a best-guess tune with 1 year of free adjustments. Either way, I suspect I need to pony up and get an hp tuners pro. What do you guys think?
