Vortec is on the left, non vortec is on the right. vortec is 8 bolts all pointing straight down, 87 or earlier is 12 bolts all perpendicular to the intake manifold mating surface, 87-95 is the same as the 87 or earlier except that the center two bolts have a funky angle.

Exactly right. Early-production 1996 model-year trucks would have been built in 1995.

Right, but when you run the vin or look at the registration and it shows model year 1996, its a 96. even if it was built late 95. No need to muddy the waters.Model year 95 was a TBI motor.
