Mine was a complete overhaul. Still far short of 12.8 quarts.

In quarts it is 13.5...
(12.8 figure is litres).

Unless there's 2.3 litres inside the box internals then either the GM 7.3 litres figure is wrong or my dipstick is the wrong one. Should we all measure our dipsticks and report back?

Haynes says 7.7 Qrts for drain and filter change - taken straight from GM literature presumably.

i removed the pan in mine and only 4qts or so came out.
What did your dipstick register before you dropped it?

What year? The early models have a shallow pan, whereas later ones have a deep pan. 1997 is the transition year. I don't know if that makes any difference though. Probably not according to that published number of the capacity...

it’s hard to tell by the dipstick, that’s why i wanted to drain it and fill the appropriate quantity and see what the dipstick says ( i changed the fluid 9 months ago and the dipstick always showed a low level)
It’s 95 but who knows if the tranny wasn’t replaced.
does it look shallow or deep?

My dad's 92 took a good 7 quarts with a filter change.

I'm rebuilding a '95 model at the moment. I didn't measure how much fluid I took out, but I think the 7 quarts is ballpark.

95' is considered early model, so shallow pan. Both pans look similar, they just have subtle differences and filters are different ( filters sit on the pan.)

Here's an early (right) and late (left) pan. The gasket actually fits either. I had bought the late style because my didn't have a drain plug. I didn't realize it then they were different, although I didn't get a chance to swap them.

I have since added a home-made drain plug to the early pan. Haven't installed it, but hopefully won't leak. It's just a 1/2 bolt, a nut welded on that back and a nylon washer.

Don't know if this helps but here's my 1999 pan that gave up exactly 5 litres when drained.
Note the correction made there (from 7qrts to 5 litres). I've just re-read the thread (had forgotten it was me that started it!) and first post says I took 5 litres from the pan. So 4 litres maybe isn't as catastrophic as first appears.
Surely, if it has been running very low the fluid will have been overworked, overheated, and smell like it has been?
