Received a portion of my RA order today. 8 pushrods. The rest are on the way I guess, along with the balls and nuts. I need to get more paint and clear coat to paint the new valve covers from Speedway. Once that is done I am pulling the old covers, replacing pushrods and hardware, setting valve lash, and hopefully getting rid of that annoying noise.

It’s either the valve cover baffles making noise or a loose rocker. I’ll check them before putting new parts in but want to be prepared.

Then a new thermostat will be installed because the other one is stuck open. Need to get to HF and pick up a pump/reservoir to drain the system.

$200 for this. The custom cans were $160 for two. When I painted my valve covers and air cleaner last time I spent probably 2/3 of that with an additional can of paint.

Crazy times. It’s good paint and I know the company needs to make money. Just wish it were a little less is all. Oh well.

I’m also going to get the GMC’s roofline fixed in June. Have to get down to the shop for a revised quote. I’ll feel a lot better when that’s fixed. It’s always worried me.

Replaced the thermostat today. The one that came out was a Motorad. Sure enough it was stuck open. Replaced with a GM unit. Got her all bled and the heat is back! Before the thermostat failed this thing would get so hot in the cab. After the failure it was of course ice cold.

And my valve covers are in their first coat of primer now. Tomorrow I’ll install them along with re-setting valve lash and preload.

Valve lash and preload job was a success. I’ll admit I was pretty nervous. I followed Schurkey’s write up and it worked well. Fired it up, no clatter (too loose) and idled very smooth without any bucking or hiccups (too tight).

A couple of observations:
1) some of the lifters aren’t pumping oil up to the rocker arms. Dirty lifter I suppose. I am going to run a can of seafoam through the system and change the oil in 300 miles.
2) I purchased and planned to install new jam nuts from Melling. I installed them all loosely by hand first. Upon tightening them with my ratchet, I noticed metal shavings on the stud. I used a magnet to remove those shavings then removed the nut. The nut had damaged threads upon removal. I know these nuts are supposed to be tight due to the deformation, but tight enough to damage threads and introduce shavings into my engine? What’s up with that? I re-used the originals which performed without issue.

I also re-installed my HD fan clutch and 11 blade fan.

Going to shoot the first coat of clear on the valve covers now.
