Looking at buying a 1st Gen s 10 with the 5 speed. What engine should I get as far as reliability? The options are 2.5, 2.8, and 4.3. won't be doing much hauling. Just my go to work truck.

Hard to beat a 4.3, so that would be my first choice. With that said out of the 5 S10s I owned over the years, two had 2.8s, and both were very reliable for me, and wouldn't hesitate to own another. I had one 4 cylinder, but was beat to hell, and was not in the best of shape, so wasn't a good example.

My 1st s10 was an 85 rcsb w/ 2.5L auto. That thing would do smoke shows all day, no joke. Wish I never sold it.
Had an 88 s-blazer 2.8L 5spd, was ok, no spd demon, but reliable.
Had a 93 Bravada 4.3L AWD, that was fun. Stolen
Had an 89 s-blazer 4.3L AT 4x4. Wish I never sold it.
I def liked my 1st gens better than my 2nd gens.
I just wish that the 1st gen had a crew cab available from the factory.
