I just put a conical mound of Plumber's Putty (Play-Doh or similar) on the oil pump pickup--the metal shield not the actual screen.) A little oil on the inside of the pan bottom--and push the pan back into place. Remove, and see how thick the squished putty is.

But I don't do this in-the-chassis; and having to maneuver the pan into place could be a problem. A person could measure from the flange of the pan to the inside of the sump; and then measure from the gasket area of the block to the bottom of the pickup screen gets about the same result.

454 boat engine. Flywheel forward--requires extended oil pump pickup tube.
