Hey new here. I recently spun a rod bearing on my 305 in my 1998 gmc c1500. i wanted to replace it with a 350. I know that there are some diffeneces with 1998 engines vs the pre 96' engines. Do i need a 96 and newer engine or can I use any old 350 small block?

You can use any 350 block, but I would look for one with a one-piece rear main seal ('87 and later). Finding one with roller cam provisions is important, but not insurmountable. If you ever plan on using the engine for serious towing, look for four-bolt mains.

What does New York have for emissions regulations? Are they like Commiefornia, where aftermarket parts need to have exemption numbers or they're illegal?

Engine swaps under those conditions get complex quickly.

IF you don't have emissions testing, the fastest way to upgrade to a 350 is with a '96-up Vortec 5.7L and all the associated computer programming.
