The right rear wheel cylinder blew out Sunday on the tahoe. It's a 1999 with the 10 inch rear drum brakes. I thought the 1/2 ton trucks and tahoes only came with 10 or 11 inch drums on the rear. When I went to the local retail store to buy a new wheel cylinder and shoes the counter person said they had two offerings in 10 inch, a high performance and a non-high performance. The hp was cheaper so I went with those, assuming the hp rating was a marketing gimmick for the shie lining. When I got home to install the shoes it turns out they are a completely different style and quite a bit wider than what my Tahoe came with. I took them back to the store and got the non high performance shoes and they match exactly what this Tahoe came with.
My question is, what are these high performance 10 inch brakes and what are they original equipment on? I was under the impression the 1/2 ton trucks and Tahoes (excluding 454 ss) only had the 10 inch brakes everyone here seems to hate or the 11 inch drums like the 1/2 ton suburban came with standard.

Interesting....I got a quote from oh reallys this morning, on brake shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware kit for my one ton, which is JB8 code. It has the 10.5 full floater axle, and I thought those all used the 13x3.5 shoes. They say it could be those or the 13x2.5. I thought the 2.5 was what they ran on the 8 lug 2500 with 9.5 semi floating axle, like my '90 R2500 Burb had. Guess I need to jack it up and yank a rear wheel off, see what I got....

Looking at Rockauto, it looks like the 10" is the normal non-performance, and 11" is the performance/police-package. Often different parts use different points of reference and you have to be paying close attention to catch it. In this case some of the parts specifying diameter, and some are saying for (or not for) the police package.

I believe the 2.5" shoes are for the JB7/JD7 RPOs.

That's what I thought. I told them it's a one ton with JB8 and that apparently didn't make any difference. I'm going to another store in a day or two and ask them, and see what they come up with.

I have no idea what the "high performance" 254mm (10") brakes would be.

Post a link to the shoes you bought that didn't fit.

According to the '97 C/K service manual there's the 2.5" wide shoes for JB/JD7. The 3.5" shoes are for JB8. But JB8 has two versions of front rotors, dual rear wheel vehicles get thicker front rotors (1.5" thick) than single-rear-wheel vehicles (1.26" thick). Maybe the SUVs are different.

The in-house description of the part is incorrect. Online, the same part number is for 11 inch drums. In house at the counter the same part number description says 10 inch brakes. Wild.
