Silly me, i tried to remove the yoke with a 3 leg puller and the deflector (?) bent in 3 places. Is it still usable or am i looking for a new one?

Yeah, probably ok. That's like a little shield to protect the seal I believe. Try to get it back to the original shape by gently tapping and prying and make sure it's not scrapping the case, and ship it.

What’s this thing that looks like an integral oil seal? Is that the actual deflector? I saw photos of new yokes that don’t have it.

The actual seal goes into the housing. I think that's more of a dust/debris shield.

BTW are going to put any sealant on the threads on the pinion that bolts the yoke on? Some guys put Loctite and some put plumbing pipe thread sealer.

The axle I tore apart also had that white paste-looking compound.

I think it's to prevent gear oil from coming up through the threads. I used plumbing thread sealer based on what I read. I haven't swapped the axle though.

That should also work...

I've got an eBay search for the "official" yoke-pulling tool; they're available but selling at $200+. I've been waiting for an "affordable" one for about five years. Good luck.

Another option--which I have not tried and therefore cannot actually endorse--is something like this. Sold by multiple sellers, this is one of many:

I pulled the yoke off the axle I was messing with a 2-jaw puller. I just grabbed the back of thick flanges right where the threaded holes for the cap are. This was a newer/different axle, so yoke is different I'm sure.

I saw a similar tool for holding the yoke and I thought I would fabricate something similar from scrap steel, but I used an 18" plumbers Rigid pipe wrench. Worked well. I tightened the nut with a cordless impact and by luck got it just right on to give pinion preload within specs.
