Great Teacher
So after many years of wanting and looking I finally found one. Sold my 2015 BMW 328d sport wagon at 2 pm Saturday to some guys who flew in from cali, bought CrewCad (it’s new name) at 5 pm Saturday and drove it the 2 miles home With a stop at taco cabana for family dinner where I took up two spots and still stuck out 4 feet into the road, lol.
last po owned it about a year or so and started fixing it up, but since it sat 99.5% of time in front yard in front of front door… amd he only drove it to local shows now and again,Wife requested removal of lawn ornament. Or so the story goes. He knows people I know, as El Paso car scene is incestual, everybody buys everybody’s cars, everybody knows everybody and if not knows someone who knows somebody etc. and that story was confirmed.
it’s not pretty, yet. But it runs and what is done seems to have Been done pretty well But age and weather have definitely taken a toll. I work from home now permanently so my daily drive is a couple miles to drop daughter at school, amd picking up teenage son on weekends from exs house. Ie I don’t need a 45-50 mpg sport wagon. Though it sure was nice to have, mod and learn new skills on.
the orphan’s specs:
134k 95 3500 CCLB DRW,
powertrain:
454 TBI 4l80e, with a US gear ne’ Doug Nash overdrive hanging off the back of that. Ie, 2200 rpm cruising down the freeway at 70ish, about 2500 at 80. Not bad, not 1700 like the wagon but no screaming banshee at 3700 like my sons r53 mini either.
Didn’t want diesel… good economy but sword of Damocles hanging over head always, and no more power than 454. Dad had a new single cab SRW 454 back in 99 for cattle trailer hauling and it was reliable. Reliably get you there at 10mpg, loaded or unloaded.
apparently has at least a 30 gallon tank as I recieved it nigh emply and put 30 gallons in it.
Lowering: 5/7 ish drop, beltech spindles. Tinworks flip kit supposedly. Helper bags, no compressor, shraders on bed corners.
rollers: PO did 22” alcoas custom cut by Micheals over in AZ with new Michelin (iirc) tires a year ago and they have beads so they actually ride pretty dang well. At least as good as my 18/19 did on the wagon. No out of balance vibrations etc. it’s still a truck though.
I have the OE inners and really old school (and kind of fugly) 17 “ chrome American eagle alloy outers and front as rollers for when goes to paint etc.
exterior, it was a w/t, ergo white no cruise no power windows locks or mirrors, it went to some sort of conversion company who painted it red, including the jambs, did the USGear, added the typical 90s wood trim on everything (and actually I do like the handle surrounds in wood) and appeenrty it had a mini shell and power tonneau.
later I someone added a caddy clip, caddy taillights, shaved all the exterior handles, tailgate flip handle, shaved the stake pockets, amd added rear roll pan and hidden hitch.
This would be the person who painted the black and pinstripe To two tone it, but didnt paint the two tone thru the jambs Amd then the outdoor Life killed the paint.
amd finally the po did the wheels tires, , some sort of dubious quality 2 din head unit with back up cam. and removed the non functional tonneau and passé quarter shell, cleaned some things up, redid a few things, some well some not so well (seats are not great and are bolted to square tubing frames aping the original benches and using original risers… and then was told to put it up for sale.
