    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

Got the thing into a transmission shop familiar with GMT400's and finally got the musical drivetrain diagnosed. Sounds like torque converter, or one of the bearings associated with it. So a light rebuild is in it's near future. Was looking around at parts, which leads me to my next question...

Parts, parts, and more parts! Doors all ready to go: More interior bits. Overhead panel, dome light, and sun visors from a Tahoe. Planning to get a blank plate to replace the old A/C knob, and leave some spare wiring in there to put a screen for backup camera later on down the road. New...

I'll actually miss the reliability of the manual windows, but the position of the lock on the door makes power locks almost required. Crawling around the cab to unlock all your doors is the worst. Also that nice little velour insert on the Silverado doors is a nice additional comfort touch on...

Picked up rears today. Think I'll grab a new carpet insert with some sound deadening while I'm at it. Just need wiring, yank the seats out of the 6.5, and time to pull the truck in the shop again!

Picked up a set of Tahoe front doors in nice condition for the front, got a bead on some Suburban ones for the rears, hopefully snag those this weekend. The Tahoe part-out mentioned someone was coming for the dash plastics and instrument cluster, so he'll ping me if they don't take the wiring...

Good to know. Will make the hunt so much easier. Good tip on the Tahoe doors @618 Syndicate What about the seats? Do the rears fit the same bolt pattern?

I was wondering about that. Would the doors from a Suburban/Tahoe work on the crew cab as well? Would make my hunt for donor doors/wiring way easier, if that were the case.

Yeah, the diesel 4WD is honestly a nicer truck mechanically, but I went sour pickles when it came to the lowering equation. I'm with @Orpedcrow on this one, start a build thread! Would love to see what a fab guy can do with a 4x4 (or former 4x4 as you mention)!

Yeah, that seemed to be the most obvious answer, but I cannot find anywhere in the harness or at any of the connection points any evidence, either visual or from my multimeter, of it grounding unexpectedly. May take another sniff test this weekend, see if there's a junction or section of cable I...

After the last of the electrical gremlins are chased down, that's next on the menu! (along with exhaust) Planning on swapping the interior from the diesel too, as it has the 60/40 Silverado power seats in LOVELY condition, vs. the crappy vinyl base model benches in the gasser.

    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

Quick trip to Canada and back was a good shakedown cruise for the gasser. Think the front brake rotors might be a bit warped, but other than that, was a smooth, trouble-free ride. Didn't have a chance to address the headlight/wiper situation, other than taking yet another look at the wiring...

Would be fun, but this is a tow rig first, cool guy truck second. At least I won't have to worry about rubbing when I lower it :)

Amen! The ones it has on currently are some sort of Alcoa-style replica. Cleaned up nicer than I thought, but the hubcaps install on the backside of the wheel (not knock/pop off like a lot of ones now) and makes the lugs an absolute ******* to get off. Looking forward to swapping them out with...

Cranked it manually to TDC and watched the distributor spin to be sure, reinstalled 180 degrees from the point it was at (finally on TDC Compression) and she fired right up. Couple spark plug cables weren't quite all the way seated, but after enough time to get the air outta the lines, she purrs...

That's a good point. I think at this point, I'd like just like to make ABSOLUTELY sure I've got it right, and confirm I'm correct in my assumption about being 180 off, is all. Thanks for the hints on the valves, I'll give that trick a shot.

    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

Finally had time over the holidays to track down all the necessary parts. Just got done putting in new gaskets under the plenum, throttle body and emissions. Fresh set of Bosch injectors, spark plugs/cables, and new distributor. Got everything in, set the engine to TDC, got the distributor in...

Aw I wish, looks like it's not made for the Gen VI like I have. Thanks for the link though!

Yeah, I was made aware of the nuisance these things cause when I started looking into a 454. I've actually found NOS rails on eBay, but I'd rather just put a new manifold to support an aftermarket rail, rather than install another crappy plastic one. Everything on this thing is clearly original...

Nasty. Injectors didn't look a whole lot better once removed either. Definitely want to replace the crappy plastic fuel rail, and crusty harness plugs. Sourcing injectors is a piece of cake, but only issue I'm having is finding a decent substitute for either new harness or rail that doesn't...

    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

Tearing into this thing gives me an appreciation for just how simply these things were put together. Had to replace a headlight bulb on the Hilux which involves taking both turn signals and the whole grille assembly off, which is held on by an endless multitude of fragile, annoyingly placed...

Pulled the truck into shop where it will remain for the next month or two so I can dig into it. Has a slight misfire when it's cold, so digging into plugs and other ignition items. Has the original injectors, so those have gotta go. Other stuff from sitting for a couple years. Digging out the...

Yeah, the 6.5 did a great job and good mileage with a bed full of bikes and cab full of the boys, but I could've stood for more power when towing .... and the 6.5 is not the engine you wanna wring much more juice out of. Can definitely tune/thrash the 454 a good bit more. Kind of a bummer since...

    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

So I thought I had a short in the fuel pump/injection wiring or something, as the 6.5 randomly snuffed itself out at idle at the shop this evening. Immediately accessible wiring harnesses look free from wear-through, and connections were solid. Scanner didn't show any codes, but I did notice the...

    1998 3500 crew/longbed build

After digging into available mods for the truck, and a couple trips to SoCal and back, while it's clear this truck is in phenomenal running condition, I came to the conclusion that I'd definitely like a bit more power while towing (can't really do much to the 6.5 without risking blowing it up)...

All my searches have had keywords with specifics of my drivetrain and model ... in an attempt to get a better result, but not the case. There a serious benefit in knowing the forums, and knowing who's posts to look for. (like you do) Thanks for linking this one! Digging into it now.
