    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

Glad you are enjoying the videos! 1. I don't have a torque spec for the jam nut. You'll want to get them pretty tight. 2. Yes, I did both the pitman and idler arm, I should have included those in the front end rebuild but I had already installed them.

I've had great luck with AC Delco stuff, I wouldn't be scared to use it for the front end rebuild.

I wish you would have said this before I did the master cylinder! I'll probably run it as is for a while, but if I'm not happy with the brakes I'll go this route.

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

I finished off the front end rebuild with a new set of brakes. The old rotors were warped really bad so I decided to try a set of slotted rotors this go-around, we will see if it they do any better. YouTube video:

It's been a while since I posted an update, so here it is... the front end rebuild is complete! This took much longer than expected, mainly due to me being a perfectionist and wanting to clean and paint the frame while everything was apart. A note to anyone else trying this, the lower control...

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

The transmission is back in! The only tricky part was the adjustment of the TV cable. I was able to start the truck and it appears to be leak free. Also serviced the rear differential while I waited on a few parts for the front suspension. The next project will be to get the front suspension...

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

With the transmission out I decided to go ahead and replace the rear main seal. The transmission is back from the shop and should be going back in soon. YouTube video:

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

A few weeks ago I replaced the transmission pan gasket hoping that was the source of my transmission fluid leak. Unfortunately, the transmission would still leak after sitting for a day. I talked to the local transmission shop and was told this is most likely the front pump o-ring. Out came the...

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

I tackled everyone’s favorite job, removing the lower ball joints that are riveted in place. Made a video showing the best way that I could find to remove them which included a drill, hammer, and an air chisel! YouTube video:

Control arms are out. Just need to get the lower ball joint rivets knocked out and everything cleaned up so that I can get started on the front end rebuild. YouTube video:

I was dreading this job but it actually went much smoother than I expected. Sway bar end links are out. Control arms are next! YouTube video:

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

While I had the steering shaft out to replace the rag joint, I noticed the lower steering column bearing had quite a bit of movement. This does not seem to be a super common repair but I imagine it will help a little bit with the loose steering that so many people talk about in these trucks...

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

Back to work on the truck! I replaced the steering shaft rag joint last night. Hopefully the steering will be tighter when I get it all put back together! YouTube video:

    1990 K1500 a/c repair

Dumb question, is is possible to have the system re-filled with R12 after replacing the parts or does it have to be converted to R134a?

    1990 K1500 a/c repair

I bought a 1990 K1500 with a frozen a/c compressor. The previous owner routed a shorter belt around the a/c compressor and it appear to have been this way for quite some time as the a/c pulley has developed some rust on it. The compressor looks original to the truck and I can barely turn it it...

Timing light arrived and I got the timing set. Engine sounds good, no more smoke at startup, and so far no leaks!! YouTube video:

Flipped the distributor and it fired up! I’ve got a timing light on order to finalize the timing but it was good to hear it run again. Went ahead and replaced the ignition control module while I had the distributor out again.

Going to play with the timing tonight, but went ahead and installed a new fuel filter last night. YouTube video:

    1990 GMC K1500 restoration

I tried but it didn't start! I've checked all of the obvious things (spark and fuel). Right now I am thinking it must be timing related. Perhaps I put the distributor in 180 degree off? I was going to do more troubleshooting this weekend.

Interesting, they don’t show the two wire retainers at all in that image. I like the way I ended up routing it, did you see something that I am missing? And yes, I do like doing things right! :)
